October 2023 — More than 2.2 million Americans now work in the energy efficiency sector. In 2023, two of every five U.S. energy sector jobs is in energy efficiency (41.3%). All sectors of the economy benefit from this robust and growing field — which brings increased health, resilience and comfort while lowering costs for individuals, families and businesses.

The new Energy Efficiency Jobs in America report dives into specifics of these 2,215,432 jobs.

Energy efficiency (EE) is a proven job creator. At the same time, employers’ biggest challenge is finding enough skilled and qualified workers. With historic levels of federal EE funding available to states, America’s EE workforce must now grow more rapidly.

Energy Efficiency Jobs in America 2023 provides detailed fact sheets with statistics on efficiency jobs for 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

“Efficiency construction workers are in especially high demand,” said Pat Stanton of E4TheFuture. “Construction is already the largest subsector in terms of EE jobs, and training and certifications are really important — both in ensuring quality infrastructure and building performance, and in helping workers land the best jobs with the best salaries.”

“More than 84% of energy efficiency businesses are reporting difficulty in finding employees,” said Phil Jordan of BW Research Partnerships, which conducted and oversaw research efforts and compiled the report’s data. “Federal, state and local policies can help strengthen workforce development and apprenticeship programs for the energy efficiency sector.”

This report is based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics using methodology developed for the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as a supplemental survey capturing responses from 34,200 business representatives across the U.S.
